While many people know YMCA Theatre for its fantastic productions every Easter, Summer, and Christmas, it is less well known that all of the crew, stewards, wardrobe, chaperones and cast are all voluntary. Most of our cast and crew are under 18, gaining experience in transferable skills as well as theatrical skills. YMCA Theatre provides these skills alongside wider pastoral support.

Thanks to the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, YMCA Theatre has been provided with vital support to continue its work throughout its 2024 season.

YMCA Theatre produces at least four shows a year itself with the remaining roughly forty productions being a mixture of local community groups, professional productions, and educational establishments. This mixture not only provides much needed funds for the YMCA but also provides our volunteers with the experience of working with multiple different groups.

We are always looking for new volunteers, we can work with young people who have started secondary school up to aged 99. We have many different placements available. Volunteering at all ages allows for building friendships and a support network.

“We strive for a professional experience for our guests, whether they are the performers, producers or audience” Graham Ibbotson, Theatre Manager says, “That way our young people learn the importance of teamwork, brand image, customer service and quality work in theatre and beyond”.

YMCA Theatre is a flagship project for YMCA Yorkshire Coast, Liam Downey, General Manager says “We are so grateful to the people who play the People’s Postcode Lottery and the Postcode Lottery Trust for their support. This support will allow us to develop further voluntary positions and ensure that those people come away with a enhanced employability skills”.
